I have been wondering if there are many women that do actual fighting matches or spars. What kind of competitions are out there to use your strength and knowlege of fighting? I'm interested in matches with other women to train and gain more experiance at martial arts. Where I live is a small town of 28,000 and there is not many women in the area that do martial arts and even less interested in full contact. I really like Jujitsu and Kenpo. these are the two that I currently train in. Do you have any suggestions?

We spar in class, but I haven't sparred outside of class, and I don't compete. I really enjoy it as a learning experience because I learn so much about what I, personally, need to work on. Like now I need to work on not reaching to block.

We spar limited and occassionally full contact in our Hapkido class. I have also competed in local an international tourneys where I sparred other woman. I no longer spar or compete in tourneys for sparring ,weapons or forms.
I used to liek it.. but now I dispise it. I have coem to think Im far too powerful and also clumsy. Its a worrysome mix and I hate being concerned that despite the amount of control Ive been able to foster.. someday I might slip up and really hurt a friend or fellow Art member.

Many of teh MA mags out there list Comps.... you have but to go to websites or call about to see if they feature womans sparring and what type of contact/rules they allow/play by.

Up here we have a MMA school and they do cage fighting...little to ruff for me, Im looking for a little challange and I want to train for taking hits but I need a partner that is willing to train with me. My husband is a little scared and doesn't quit know what to think of it. As for me Im having a good time.

I'm going to Kilohana this weekend with my dojo, and once again I'm the only adult female. I high five myself for hanging tough with the boys but it would be nice to have a female partner.

We generally spar. Sometimes just training drills, other times will have actual matches. And depending on the rank of the fighters the contact allowed adjusts. I used to go to the GSKA tournaments for sparring outside of my classmates, or any of the tournaments the Grand Master of our style would put on, but I have dropped out of that part of martial arts for a while.

In Brazilian Jiu JItsu sparring is just a part of our daily training routine. The thing about BJJ though, is that if you're doing it right you can go as 'hard' as you want, and no one ever gets hurt because the whole point of BJJ is to control the other person - not to hurt them. And in order to control your opponent, you have to first control yourself. If you hurt your opponent, it's the same thing as loosing the match because both results stem from the same cause...ie a loss of control.

Of course...there are a lot of schools that don't really see it this way too...ESPECIALLY in the midwest. If anyone ever tries to sell you on the idea of 'no-gi BJJ' just head in the other direction and dont look back. There is no such animal. Likewise, I tend to think that schools specializing in 'MMA training' are also pretty much BS. There's stand up fighting, and there's ground fighting...the art of MMA is escentially how to transition from one to the other. MMA in and of itself, is not actually an ART at all. You need to study ONE thing, and get good at it, before attempting to mix everything together. If you do that, you're just going to wind up getting hurt before you even come close to getting skilled.

Have you ever thought about taking up Judo? People tend to not think of it as being terribly practical, but seriously - a good judoka is almost unbeatable, even in MMA competitions. The throws they use are like MAGIC. And think about it...would you rather get hit by a fist....or by a thick slab of solid concrete? And hell, you can always BLOCK a punch. Blocking the ground, especially when gravity is against you, is significantly more difficult.

    Good luck!

Jessica/Cyclops, respectfully, there are more schools of thought on MMA than yours. She should investigate any option thoroughly, of course, but the idea should not be blown off without further thought. It is not necessarily bad to learn more than one style simultaneously.

I may have posted this before, but if you look at dance, people are often learning ballet, tap, jazz and modern all at once. Each style is distinct, but each also helps the others. Some people are going to prefer to specialize, others prefer to have a broader base and explore multiple options. There is legitimacy to either approach, and each has its own set of plusses and minuses.

For the record, there are one-style schools that are crappy just like there are MMA schools that are crappy. In either case people should just do their homework and check places out in advance - observe class, talk to teachers, talk to students, review whatever literature there is, and determine what best fits into their own lives, and their own goals for getting into MA.

I believe that Jess was offering an OPINION. Are we not here to share our opinions as well as our experience? Did you not just offer up an opinion which some of us may disagree with?

Just about every martial artist I know agrees that one should rely on one's own experience in choosing a school or a style. That shouldn't stop us from expressing our advice or opinion or share our experience.

if its good enough for one of us it shuld be good enough for all of us.

Qatana, nowhere in my post to I begin to suggest that she should not express an opinion. I even started off by noting that my intention was to respectfully note something, not to have a "tone," as your post ironically does.

I was primarily responding to this line:
          >I tend to think that schools specializing in 'MMA training' are also pretty much BS.

I was merely pointing out that I feel there can be legitimacy to the opposing point of view, and that either way, everyone should make informed choices. How in the world is that saying that Jess should not have expressed her opinion?

Yes, I do. I love to spar! I seem to be better at it than I am at forms. I train in Kempo Karate at the United Studios of Self Defense and my Sensei loves to train the women in the dojo--and there's lots of us--to be tougher than the men! We always spar with control although what is considered appropriate changes as one advances in rank and ability. Also, we have an hour class on Saturday devoted to sparring. It generally includes drills in addition to sparring, but sometimes we just do a round robin (whew! great for building stamina) or put on our gear and you get to pick your opponent, and we have a very mixed class! It's great because you get to try techniques on different body types.
I like what Cyclops wrote about being in control. Martial arts certainly reveal your self to yourself! It really is mental.
I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to spar safely and get so much feedback and the opportunity to push myself and better my partners!

Our brown belts or higher are allowed to do some unsupervised light sparring, I personally suck at it. Every class except our BB class has partner practice, but that's just to smooth out assigned technique. Once a month, we're supposed to hold Shi-ai. It's like a sparring match, but nobody is awarded points. If a participant lands a solid strike then the match is put on hold while the 4 student judges and Sifu discuss the move, then the match is awarded a point. Once the match has reached 4 points, it's over. The Shi-ai is supposed to teach us about ourselves and how we respond during times of stress. I couldn't go to most of them, though, because it was always on a Saturday when I worked.

Now that I've moved away, I've been thinking about starting to train someplace local. I've been wondering about Aikido. I am really weak with locks and throws, as well as sparring. But I dont want to end up someplace that's really competitive, uber formal or too hard on my joints.
