Lol...no, that's not what I said. I was mentioning to my teacher last night how much more I get out of this tribe than any other martial arts tribe, and that's what he said. "Oh, men are stupid."
Case in point, though...My brother and future brother in law were talking about fighting (they're eat up with Ultimate Fighting these days) and about my cousin (who has studied a couple of different styles in the past). My brother says "Oh, I'd just like him to teach me what he knows."
What am I? Chopped liver?!?! I said "Helloooo, I'm right here. Why don't you want me to teach you what I know?"
"Er...uh..."
I showed him a couple of releases for grabs the next day, but I was a little stunned then. I mean, I've offered before, and I see them a couple of times a month at least. And he wants a guy he rarely SEES to teach him?!

well if you pay attention to the ads on TV these days, the idea these days is that we aren't supposed to expect the men to be smart. Nope, they are irrecoverably stupid and we are supposed to just take up slack for them by either cooking or letting them eat at carl's jr.
god forbid they actually feel stupid.
I guess its better to them to feel stupid in front of a man (boy).
I guess it makes them feel stuipider to learn from a woman.
makes me want to use Qatana tact. :)
I used to spar with dudes - light and no contact. they would act like my strikes were non-existent. I could never figure out what good that would do them in a real fight. seems it would always be to my/a woman's advantage. -

On teh other hand, many of teh guys at our dojang watch Ultimate fighting and will flat out tell you how STUPID teh guys are that do it. They tear apart technique, and teh fact that there isnt any "rules" but you cant do so many real - life techniques.
Mabye the guys at my dojang(and my hubby who hates most sportts) are mutants. They treat me with repect,will spar with me as hard or as lightly as I wish- and most of em will tell me if I've gotten a good lick on em. They dont seem to have Egos regarding woman. They use me for demonstration purposes , and a coupel who are higher rank will ask me to remind them how to do a technique they havent done in forever or teahc them form work(Im a form junkie).
Men CAN be stupid.. its the amount of testosterone. Perhaps what your male kinfolk need, Diana, is to be cuffed and thrown abotu a bit- an dthen NOT shown how to do it. "Yes, I know how to trounce you, and frankly, you'r e not worthy of being taught what I know becuase you're fixin to use it in way that would demean my training". Mabye its snotty of me.. but I feel that way. You dont learn Martial Arts to kick someones a** for fun. You learn it for Discipline, Respect,health and Self Defense. IMHO

Wed, September 26, 2007 - 6:34 AMLMAO. What a great discussion! My teacher (Grandmaster Henry Cook) has the same attitude, generally speaking. He's said on more than one occassion that women are naturally smarter than men, in so many words. Says things to the effect of...a woman knows when someone is full of sh@t right off the bat. A woman can take more pain and thinks on an entirely different level than a man. A woman would never think twice about jumping in front of a bullet to save someone she loves...
He, and I think any good martial arts teacher, knows that there are differences beyond the physical. And they are much bigger than we all like to let on. Those differences can effect how quickly we learn things and what we need to learn overall in the martial arts world. -

You know what amazes me? (ok, lotsa stuff does-Im a simpleton ) The amount of woman who will insist on absolute equality with men, when they can see with thier own senses that we are so very different. Inequitable. Its the jigsaws of strengths and weaknesses that make our genders meld- think I. Heck, as martial artists, we woman differ from others of our gender in many ways. I find it fascinating ...
then as I've stated above.. Im rather simple minded. Shiney objects can fascinate me also :D

Thu, October 4, 2007 - 7:05 PMI have got to say, I have only met one or two "stupid men." I will say that I did have one guy who was a much lower belt than me, turn to my Sifu and say that he didn't want to practice with me ('cause I'm a girl) and before my Sifu could answer I made it quite clear that I could take care of myself. On that note, my Sifu walked away without saying a word. (By the way, he's no longer taking classes.)
I'm very happy that my Sifu has no prejudices against women in the martial arts. I guess that is one of the benefits of having a female grand master.
All of the other guys at my school are really cool and have a great deal of respect for me. I think more so because I am a girl. They see me put everything I have into every punch, kick, elbow and knee, and while it might not be as much power as they can generate (as I'm 5'2" and 117 lbs) they seem to respect me all the more for it. -

Sorry for the delayed response, but I have been to busy to hit tribe it a long time.
Yes, a female grand master. Awesome, huh? I study Eagle Claw Kung Fu and the current grandmaster is Lily Lau. "She is the first and only woman to take over a Kung Fu system and teach openly as a Kung Fu master." (quoted from her website) I didn't know this when I started, but I was happy to find it out.

Which we KNOW from PBS is power.
it's all good baby, you can learn it somewhere else... and if you DON'T have a WILLING teacher, you will be taught incorrectly anyway... so be patient and don't feel bad nor give up.

The few posts guavachild has made make me want to bite her. They also make me salivate(usually when I havent had lunch, or a dessert). I have bananas and frozen fruit , yet guava just sounds yummy anytime. I dont have any in teh house! If any of you are gunan share, let it be a tropical fruit salad (but Im not fond of LOTSA Mango.. so go lite on that, ok?)

Did I "seem" pissed off? No, really Qatana has the right of it- although I admit you may not Wish to be bitten in a "good" way, or at least not by me. Why just a few minutes ago I had fruit salad- alas without guava. Deprived, thats me.
Guavachild, I will post frivolous things in threads just *becuase*. You gave me an 'in' , and I was in a mood to take it up. If I make One person laugh at me, Im happy. If not, errr.. well ... most the regular gals here know me. They probably roll thier eyes on a regular basis.
I would hope you woudl feel welcomed to post . If I made you feel "Unwelcome" than I apologize. Im sincere and honest to a fault. So if Im at fault, I shall fall on my own blade. (You should know its wood and it may take some time to penetrate, so pack a lunch to teh event.)

Tue, February 26, 2008 - 1:15 PMIf you get enough of a suck going and it leaves a nice bruise, then you get to have a nice sensitive spot for a few days. A really good bite lets you re-experience the---memory---for a while. And assuming that people know you practice MA, nobody will question an extra bruise here or there. Otherwise, it's not really a bite it's just a nibble. Not that I dont like nibbles... -
